The House and Senate are adjourned for the August recess. The House will convene September 3 and the Senate will return on August 15.


  *   The Los Angeles teachers union authorized a vote between August 23 - 30 to determine whether the union will strike. The union is seeking a 6.5% raise (retroactive to July 1, 2016), additional raises in the next 3 years, smaller class sizes, less testing, and "reasonable" accountability measures for charter schools. Individual schools will still be able to inquire about the criminal history of applicants in the customizable portions of the application.
  *   A group of Democrats, including Sens. The guidance seeks to clarify responses to the following questions:

     *   Does the ESEA require an LEA to reserve Title I funds under section 1113(c)(3) if all schools in the LEA are Title I schools?
     *   Does the ESEA require an LEA to reserve a specific amount of Title I funds to serve homeless students under section 1113(c)(3)?

  *   The Department of Education announced $138,000 in federal aid through the Project School Emergency Response to Violence (SERV) grant program for Marshall County School District, KY to support recovery from the deadly shooting on January 23.
